He should have just sprung for the $300 in tires that he already needed.
In addition to it costing him extra money, running on old tires just makes it harder to learn how to go fast. There's no way that you can begin to push the envelope on tires that have already become useless, and trying to run them long after they are toast just teaches you to go slow.
